چکیده
Carbapenems are group of extended-spectrum β-lactam antimicrobials frequently used for treating multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) infections. This study aimed at detecting and characterizing carbapenem resistance (CR) genes among GNB isolated from patients treated in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) Mansoura University Children's Hospital (MUCH), Egypt. It is a prospective conducted 2015 to 2016. A total 158 isolates were examined CR both phenotypically genotypically. Among Gram negative isolates, there 58 (36.7%) strains. Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) production was confirmed all (100%) isolates. Carbapenemase detected 52 (89.5%) strains while metallo beta-lactamase (MBL) found 33 (56.9%) strains. Molecular characterization revealed that 57 (98.3%) positive carbapenemase encoding genes. KPC gene the most frequent (34/58). VIM, IPM, OXA NDM also 15, 13, 9 1 isolate, respectively. Only one isolate despite ESBL phenotype. Infection with has been increasing clinical settings which limit use carbapenems. Key words: bacilli, resistance, carbapenemase, beta-lactamase, multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR), genes, unit.

Emergence of Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii in the Intensive Care Unit in Sohag University Hospital, Egypt
At present, one of the most serious issues in medicine is increasing resistance of bacterial pathogens to antimicrobial agents. This fact is associated with higher mortality and morbidity rates, prolonged hospital stays and increased treatmentrelated costs (Senkyrikova et al., 2013). Such negative trends have been observed in Acinetobacter baumannii which is responsible for a variety of nosocom...
متن کاملCorrelation between Quality of Care and Length of Hospital Stay in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Background: Length of hospital stay (LHS) is the most important and practical indicator in hospitals, which largely reflects the level of hospital performance and activity. It is also an important indicator for resource planning. Moreover, the quality of care can theoretically be related to LHS. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between LHS and quality of nursing care in...
متن کاملCauses of Neonatal Mortality in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Taleghani Hospital
Background: Neonatal survival is one of the most important challenges today. Over 99% of neonatal mortalities occur in the developing countries, and epidemiologic studies emphasize on this issue in the developed countries, as well. In this study, we attempted to investigate the causes of neonatal mortality in Taleghani Hospital, Tabriz, Iran. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we studied ca...
متن کاملFirst report of molecular characterization of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii in different intensive care units in University Hospital Split, Croatia.
Acinetobacter baumannii is an important cause of nosocomial infections such as pneumonia, septicemia, urinary tract infections, and wound infections 1. It may become resistant to a wide range of antibiotics, thus complicating the treatment of nosocomial infections 1. The emergence of carbapenem (imipenem and/or meropenem) resistance in A. baumannii has become a global concern since these lactam...
متن کاملHigh frequency of multidrug-resistant gram-negative rods in 2 neonatal intensive care units in the Philippines.
BACKGROUND Although hospital-acquired infections appear to be a growing threat to the survival of newborns in the developing world, the epidemiology of this problem remains poorly characterized. METHODS During a 10-month period, we conducted prospective longitudinal surveillance for colonization and bloodstream infection caused by gram-negative rods among all infants hospitalized in the 2 lar...
